Convenience Store Water Remediation Project

Jun 23, 2021

So Cal Water Solutions helped identify and solve issues with a public well water supply that was featured in WC&P magazine.

Water Conditioning & Purification (WC&P) is a magazine tailored to the happenings in the water treatment industry. It was a great honor to have a recent project we worked on featured as a case study in their latest issue!

A local Southern California well that was providing water to a gas station/convenience store, RV dump station, irrigation system, and one home was identified as contaminated. Well water that is serving the public at a business, as is the case for the gas station, are defined in a category of "community water supply" and need to be regulated to a certain set of standards to protect the health and safety of the people they serve.

This particular well was found to be vulnerable to potential contamination related to the petrol from the gas station and other surrounding gas stations. A methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) detection was found int he groundwater supply above the maximum safety level back in 2015. The owner of the store was provided a notice to no long distribute the water for human consumption and to increase the MTBE monitoring frequency from every year to quarterly.

The gas station owner would not be able to have drinking water available to their employees or customers without some kind of treatment system -- that's where Norma and the So Cal Water Solutions team come in!

In August of 2019, So Cal Water started the project by adding a point-of-entry water treatment system that would support the gas station only. The system consisted of backwashing filter equipped with granular actived carbon. This would filter the water used for beverages, ice machines, coffee making, and hand washing.

In 2020, the convenience store owner filed a corrective action plan (CAP) to expand the existing water treatment system to provide remediation for the entire service plumbing on the property.

Eventually, the local primary agency also required the store owner to install a separate water treatment system to service the single home as well to compy with the US EPA drinking water standards. The RV dump station and irrigation system were by passed to continue using unfiltered water.
